An essential introduction
HIV is a virus that weakens the immune system and makes the body less able to defend against infection such as flu, TB,
malaria etc.
HIV becomes AIDS when (i) the immune system dwindles to a certain low point or (ii) when an HIV positive person has three opportunistic infections.
To make things even worse, society discriminates against those with the virus. People often die in their own homes.
The children we care for are often the ones left caring for their dying parents in the months / years before they are orphaned.
We have a series of activities to help children face the trauma they will have experienced as a result of watching their parents die,
and as a result of being orphaned.
